The body of listed top criminal Khandaker Nayeem Ahmed Titon, who was shot dead in the New Market area of the capital, has been handed over to his family following a post-mortem examination.
Doctors from the forensic department of Dhaka Medical College conducted the autopsy at the hospital morgue on Wednesday afternoon.
After completion of the procedure, New Market Police Station released the body to his relatives for burial.
Titon’s elder brother, Khandaker Sayeed Akhtar Ripon, received the body from the morgue.
The family said the burial will take place in their village home at Kotwali upazila in Jashore.
Earlier, police prepared an inquest report following the incident.
Sub-Inspector Molla Shahadat of New Market Police Station noted in the report that the body bore multiple gunshot injuries.
These included wounds on the right side of the head above the ear, one above the left eyebrow, injuries on the back, left arm, under the left armpit, and a bleeding wound on the right side of the abdomen above the waist.
A case has been filed with New Market Police Station by the victim’s brother naming nine unidentified persons as accused.
According to police, Titon was shot by armed assailants in the New Market area on Tuesday night.
His identity was confirmed through fingerprint verification, said Masud Alam, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
Police sources said Titon, aged around 52, had spent more than two decades in prison and was released after the political changes following the fall of the Awami League government on 5 August, 2024, amid a mass uprising.
He was known to have influence in the Rayerbazar and Hazaribagh areas of the capital and faced multiple cases, including charges of murder, extortion, and other criminal activities.
