Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Ameer ATM Azharul Islam submitted his nomination paper for the Rangpur-2 constituency on Monday.
He filed the nomination at 1pm before the Badargonj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), who is also the assistant returning officer.
ATM Azhar was acquitted on 27 May this year in a case over crimes against humanity committed during the 1971 Liberation War. The International Crimes Tribunal cleared him of the death sentence it had handed down earlier.
Law enforcers arrested him on 22 August 2012 on charges of crimes against humanity. On 18 July 2013, prosecutors formally pressed charges at the tribunal over his alleged role in atrocities during the war.
The tribunal tried him on six charges, including murder, genocide, abduction, torture and rape. After finding him guilty, the tribunal sentenced him to death on 30 December 2014.
Following a series of legal developments after the July mass uprising, the tribunal acquitted him the following year. The verdict marked a first in the tribunal’s history.
After his acquittal, ATM Azhar returned to active politics. He has now entered the race to represent the constituency in parliament.
In Rangpur-2, BNP candidate Mohammad Ali Sarkar and Jatiya Party nominee Anisul Islam Mondol have also submitted nomination papers. In Rangpur-3, Islami Andolan Bangladesh candidate Amiruzzaman Piyal has filed his nomination.
