Mahfuj Alam, former adviser to the interim government and a prominent leader of the July mass uprising, will contest from the Lakshmipur-1 constituency as an independent candidate in the 13th National Parliamentary Election.
His younger brother, Mahbub Alam, will also contest from the same constituency, representing the National Citizen Party (NCP), where he serves as joint convener.
On Sunday afternoon, Mahfuj’s nomination papers were collected from the office of the Assistant Returning Officer and Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Ramganj Upazila, confirmed by UNO Farashid Bin Enam.
Earlier, Mahfuj had stated on Facebook that although he was offered a nomination under an electoral agreement between Jamaat and the NCP, he chose not to join the party.
As one of the three student leaders in the interim government’s advisory council, Mahfuj played a key role in the youth-led July uprising and held significant influence within NCP and related civic committees.
There had been speculation over whether he would contest under the NCP banner after leaving the advisory council, but he has now confirmed he will run independently.
Despite Mahfuj’s independent candidacy, his brother Mahbub will represent the NCP. Mahfuj’s response to his brother’s candidacy has not been disclosed.
The two brothers are from Ichhapur Union, Ramganj Upazila, Lakshmipur, where their father, Azizur Rahman Bacchu Molla, is the general secretary of the BNP at the upazila level.
