A Dhaka court on Monday placed a youth on a five-day remand for allegedly breaching the security convoy of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The suspect, Md Mohibullah Mubin, was arrested under Anti-Terrorism Act. He is accused of planning a terrorist attack and attempting to disrupt a political discussion at the capital’s KIB Auditorium.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque granted the remand following a hearing. Earlier, Tejgaon Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Asadur Rahman produced Mubin in court and requested a seven-day remand. During the court proceedings, defence lawyer Md Robiul Alam Jewel, along with several other advocates, pleaded for the cancellation of the remand, while the state prosecution strongly opposed their request.
According to case documents, Mubin was arrested on 5 September around 4pm in front of the KIB Auditorium in Manipuripara, which falls under Tejgaon Police Station. At the time of his arrest, a discussion meeting titled “Purpose and Significance of the Founding of BNP” was underway inside, and Tarique was entering the venue.
The prosecution alleges that Mubin, in collusion with unidentified accomplices, positioned himself at the venue to breach the prime minister’s security, plan a terrorist attack, and disrupt the discussion meeting. He was apprehended with the assistance of police officers on security duty, while his associates managed to flee the scene.
During the arrest, law enforcers seized a Yamaha FZS-150 CC motorcycle, two passports, two Oppo mobile phones, and SIM cards from Mubin’s possession. A case was subsequently registered against him under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009, at Tejgaon Police Station.
In the remand plea, the investigating officer stated that custodial interrogation is essential to identify the names, addresses, and locations of the fleeing accomplices. Police also aim to uncover who instructed or instigated Mubin to go to the venue, and to track his communications before and after the incident.
The investigators noted that questioning is required to verify the ownership and purpose of the two seized passports, determine where the motorcycle was sourced from, and establish whether it has any connection to the plot.
