National Citizen Party (NCP) convener and opposition chief whip Nahid Islam has urged the government to acknowledge before the people if it does not have a proper plan to run the country and sit for discussions with opposition parties.
He said the government must accept the reality that it cannot govern the country alone without the support of opposition parties.
Nahid made the remarks while addressing the concluding rally of the 11-party alliance’s Dhaka-Chattogram long march at Chattogram’s Laldighi Maidan on Saturday.
Addressing Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Nahid Islam said, “If you cannot resolve the problems left behind by the authoritarian regime, admit it to the people first. Admit that you alone cannot solve these problems. Admit that you do not have any proper plan to lead the country.”
He further said, “Sit with the opposition parties immediately. Accept the reality that you cannot run this country alone without the support of the opposition.”
Speaking about the ousted authoritarian regime, the NCP convener said the current situation was not being created to bring back the fallen autocracy, but the government’s failure to address public concerns was creating such an opportunity.
“We are not creating any opportunity for the fallen autocracy to return; rather, you are paving the way for its comeback. Because you are failing to provide solutions to the people’s problems and failing to ensure their rights,” he said.
Nahid added that people were now searching for alternatives, and the Bangladesh public had witnessed at the long march who those alternative political forces were.
“The people are looking for alternatives, and today’s long march has shown the people of Bangladesh who those alternative forces are,” he said.
