Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Noir will not return for a second season. Prime Video has decided not to continue the superhero series after its first season, despite strong reviews, 11 Emmy nominations and a solid opening on Nielsen’s US streaming chart.
According to Deadline, Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television will continue developing other series based on characters from Sony Pictures’ Universe of Marvel Characters. One project is reportedly nearing a series order, although its concept remains secret.
Spider-Noir was the second series ordered under the multi-title deal between Amazon MGM and Sony Pictures Television. It was the first to reach the screen. The first project, the Spider-Man spin-off Silk, was ultimately scrapped.
Amazon had been expected to assess Spider-Noir’s performance before deciding on the other projects. The partnership will continue, with several shows still in development. Projects under the deal receive a linear debut on MGM+, followed by a streaming release on Prime Video.
The cancellation comes despite a strong response from critics and viewers. Spider-Noir recorded a 92% critics’ score and a 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It also earned 11 Emmy nominations, the highest total among Prime Video series in 2026.
Cage’s star power and the familiar Marvel property helped the series make a strong debut. It ranked No. 2 on Nielsen’s US Top 10 for original series in its opening week, with 851 million minutes viewed. Over its first six weeks, the show generated 2.6 billion viewing minutes in the US, according to Nielsen Streaming Content Ratings.
However, the series did not maintain the momentum of other recent Prime Video releases such as Off Campus, Reacher and Ride Or Die. It dropped out of the platform’s daily Top 10 rankings relatively quickly.
The series also carried a high production cost. The team filmed both colour and black-and-white versions of the show. The balance between viewing performance and production expense likely played a role in the decision, although Prime Video has not publicly given a specific reason for the cancellation.
The first season, however, largely wrapped up its story and left only a few loose threads. Fans are therefore unlikely to face a major cliffhanger following the cancellation.
Based on the Marvel comic Spider-Man Noir, the live-action series follows Ben Reilly, played by Cage, a seasoned but down-on-his-luck private investigator in 1930s New York. After a deeply personal tragedy, he must confront his past life as the city’s only superhero.
Cage led a cast that included Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, Abraham Popoola, Jack Huston and Brendan Gleeson.
Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot served as co-showrunners and executive producers. They developed the series with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse team members Phil Lord, Christopher Miller and Amy Pascal. Lord and Miller executive produced through their Lord Miller banner alongside Aditya Sood and Dan Shear. Pascal executive produced through Pascal Pictures, while Cage and Pavlina Hatoupis also served as executive producers. Harry Bradbeer directed and executive produced the first two episodes.
