Elon Musk’s promise to create an AI-generated version of Homer’s ancient epic ‘The Odyssey’ has taken its first concrete step, with Grok Imagine releasing a seven-minute episode months after he announced plans for a full-length film.
According to Variety, the episode appeared on X on 23 October and credits Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker as creative collaborators. The release follows Musk’s July announcement that his AI tool would produce a feature-length adaptation that would be “historically accurate” and faithful to Homer’s work by the end of 2026.
The video follows Odysseus as he prepares to sail for Troy, with scenes showing his wife, Penelope, and their son, Telemachus, alongside preparations for the Trojan War. It presents the story through AI-generated visuals rather than a conventional live-action production.
The release also comes amid Musk’s criticism of Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of ‘The Odyssey’. Musk has objected to casting choices in Nolan’s film, particularly Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy and Elliot Page as Sinon, and accused the director of prioritising representation over historical accuracy.
Musk’s AI project has drawn mixed reactions from viewers, with some criticising its visuals and storytelling. The seven-minute episode also falls short of the full-length feature Musk originally promised, and no release date or episode count for the larger project has been announced.
The project adds to the debate over artificial intelligence in filmmaking, including questions about creative control, visual quality and whether AI-generated productions can deliver the storytelling associated with traditional cinema.
