Amanda Seyfried has stood by her decision to turn down a major role in Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, admitting that she once feared the film could damage her career but saying she made the choice based on her personal priorities and plans for a family.

According to Deadline, during a career retrospective and Q&A with the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, the actress recalled doubting whether the 2014 superhero film would succeed.

The prospect of a talking tree and a raccoon travelling through space seemed too unusual to her at the time.

“I’m like, ‘This is not going to be a hit. The tree and the raccoon are talking to each other. And also they’re all in space,’” Seyfried said, describing her initial reaction. She feared that if the film failed, it could harm her career.

The actress acknowledged that her prediction was wrong, as ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ became a major box-office success.

However, she said she does not regret passing on the role of Gamora, which eventually went to Zoe Saldaña.

“I still don’t take back that decision. I made it for myself. I made it for my family that I knew I wanted to have,” she said.

Seyfried also cited the demands of superhero productions as a reason for declining the part.

She said she disliked spending long hours in make-up trailers, performing stunts, working at heights and acting against green screens without a physical environment around her.

The actress has previously explained that she did not want to spend six months of each year living in London for the production.

At the time, she was also interested in working on Seth MacFarlane’s western comedy ‘A Million Ways to Die in the West’.

James Gunn directed ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, which starred Chris Pratt alongside Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper.

The film launched a successful franchise that continued with two more standalone films and crossover appearances in the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Seyfried’s comments offer a reminder that major casting decisions often involve personal considerations as well as career calculations.

Although she underestimated the film’s success, she remains comfortable with the choice she made at the time.
