Water Resources Minister Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee has claimed that the people did not accept the long march organised by the 11-party alliance.
He made the remarks on Saturday while attending a celebration rally organised by the Lakshmipur District BNP marking the party’s 48th founding anniversary.
Warning against threats directed at BNP, Anee said, “Do not issue threats to BNP. BNP is the party of late president ziaur Rahman, Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman. Do not try to intimidate us. BNP is a party that emerged from the streets through movements and struggles. Therefore, threats or distasteful remarks will not bring any result.”
He said the government led by Tarique Rahman was formed with the people’s mandate after 17 years of struggle.
“The government has not even completed six months in office. Starting a movement at this stage is not appropriate,” he said.
Speaking about the 11-party alliance’s long march, Anee said, “There was no public response to the long march. A few identified individuals took part in it. The people of the country did not accept this programme.”
Addressing the Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami, Anee said provocative statements and threats were not liked by the people.
“If people accepted these programmes, they would have responded. Those who remained hidden for so long cannot create a movement through their workers or identified individuals. They do not practise politics,” he said.
He alleged that the group was associated with Jamaat-e-Islami and said, “They are trying to harm you and me. They are harmful to the country and society. Therefore, everyone must stay away from them.”
Addressing women, Anee warned against what he described as misinterpretations of Islam being spread from door to door.
“Some people are going to homes and misinterpreting Islam in its name. They are saying that joining Jamaat will guarantee entry into paradise. Paradise is not achieved so easily. Do not be misled by their words. Everyone must remain alert,” he said.
