At least 89 people have died in India’s most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, following heavy rains and lightning, the state’s disaster management and relief department said on Thursday.
Relief Commissioner’s post on social media platform X reported that 89 people were killed on Wednesday, due to severe weather. The storm also left 53 injured, damaged 87 houses, and killed 114 livestock through rain, hail and lightning.
Another relief official said some deaths were caused by falling trees and collapsing walls, Reuters reports.
The state’s chief minister has directed officials to assist survivors and distribute financial aid within 24 hours.
Television footage showed strong winds uprooting trees and billboards, some crashing onto cars. Wooden furniture from roadside shops was seen flying amid dust and debris.
