US President Donald Trump said talks with China’s President Xi Jinping were “great”, but repeatedly declined to answer questions about Taiwan.

Trump and Xi walked slowly together towards the Temple of Heaven as a guide quietly explained the historic site, reports bbc.

The rest of the delegation remained several paces behind, closer to the park, while the two leaders stood before the striking blue-and-gold imperial structure. The temple complex was traditionally used by emperors to pray for good harvests.

Xi smiled as Trump appeared to listen attentively to the guide before the Chinese leader directed him to a spot where the two men paused silently for photographers.

When reporters asked Trump how the talks were progressing, he replied: “great”.

As another journalist asked whether Taiwan had been discussed, Trump continued his earlier remarks, saying: “great place, incredible, China’s beautiful”.

Reporters again asked whether Taiwan had featured in the discussions, but Trump looked straight ahead in silence, while Xi also remained expressionless.

The question was raised for a third time after the two leaders turned and walked towards the temple steps.
