Netflix is in discussions to adapt Richard Osman’s bestselling mystery novel We Solve Murders for television, with the British author confirming that talks are under way, states Screen Rant.
Osman revealed the development while appearing on The One Show. Asked about a possible adaptation, he said he could not reveal details but confirmed that he was working with his “friends at Netflix” on the project.
Netflix has not officially announced the adaptation.
Published in 2024, We Solve Murders follows Amy Wheeler, a private security officer who finds herself framed for the deaths of three clients. She sets out to clear her name with help from a celebrity novelist and her retired father-in-law.
The novel became a major bestseller, reaching the UK Official Top 50 and The New York Times Best Seller list. Osman is also preparing to expand the story with a sequel, We Chase Shadows, which is due to arrive on 15 September.
A Netflix adaptation would mark the first time one of Osman’s books becomes a television series. However, the streamer already adapted his 2020 novel The Thursday Murder Club into a feature film last year.
The film starred Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan and Ben Kingsley, with Osman serving as an executive producer. It has since attracted 79.5 million views on Netflix.
The Thursday Murder Club received a 77% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, while its audience score stood at 54%. Despite its strong viewership, Netflix has yet to confirm adaptations of the remaining books in the series.
Osman previously told The Times that he would like to adapt the other books himself. He has also expressed a desire to see Meryl Streep play Rosie, one of the central characters in We Solve Murders.
No casting, release date or further production details have emerged for the potential series.
Before becoming a bestselling novelist, Osman worked as a television creator and producer on programmes including Prize Island and If I Ruled the World. He has also presented Pointless, Two Tribes and Child Genius.
Meanwhile, The Thursday Murder Club is available to stream on Netflix.
