US President Donald Trump on Sunday suggested that the state of New Mexico be renamed “New America,” extending his recent string of controversial name‑change proposals.
The idea, immediately rejected by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, follows Trump’s order last week to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America” amid a trade dispute with Canada, reports AFP.
“Many people suggested changing the name of New Mexico… to NEW AMERICA,” Trump wrote on social media. “So much more prestigious and beautiful for the people of that potentially incredible State. Wow, I Love It!!!”
The White House reposted an image showing “Mexico” crossed out and replaced with “America.” Several US media outlets reported the proposal originated as an internet hoax.
Governor Lujan Grisham told Fox News the name “isn’t up for debate — it’s been ours since before the United States existed,” adding that the president was trying to “distract Americans” from issues such as soaring gas prices.
Trump has previously floated renaming the Strait of Hormuz “Trump Strait” during the conflict with Iran, later suggesting he was not serious. On his first day back in office in 2025, he declared the Gulf of Mexico would be called the “Gulf of America,” a move rejected by Mexico. Canada has also dismissed his attempt to rename Lake Ontario.
