A young man was beaten to death with iron rods by assailants in Begumganj upazila of Noakhali on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Zubair Hossain, 23, also known as Rakib.
The incident took place around 10:30pm on Saturday at Pakmunshirhat Bazaar in Khanpur village under Sharifpur union.
The victim Rakib was the son of expatriate Md Hanif of Bhola Gazi’s house in Khanpur village, Ward No. 6 of the same union.
According to police and local sources, Rakib’s father and one brother live abroad. Rakib had worked in various shopping malls in Dhaka and Noakhali. A few days earlier, a dispute arose over a woman between Rakib’s cousin’s son and a local shopkeeper.
Efforts were made to settle the matter locally. On Saturday night, both sides gathered at Pakmunshirhat Bazaar to resolve the issue. Locals advised Rakib to leave the area, and he set off for home with his younger brother Rimon.
On the way, when they reached a dark spot near the bazaar, a group of miscreants blocked their path and attacked. Rimon was also beaten when he tried to protect his brother.
Witnesses allege the attackers struck Rakib repeatedly on the head and body with iron rods, leaving him critically injured. Locals rescued him and took him to the 250‑bed Noakhali General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Begumganj Police Station’s Officer‑in‑charge Md Shamsuzzaman said police visited the scene after receiving the report. The identities of those involved have not yet been confirmed.
He added that steps are being taken to uncover the motive and identify the attackers.
