Three members of a family were found dead after a trawler carrying 14 passengers capsized in Sonargaon, Narayanganj, while they were on way to attend a relative’s wedding.
Their father, Helal Uddin, 55, remains missing.
Helal’s wife, Shirin Begum, 45, and another daughter, Lamia Akter, were rescued alive by locals immediately after the capsize and are receiving treatment at the local health complex.
The deceased were Helal Uddin’s son Sajib, 24, daughter Samia, 17, and younger son Samin, 5. Their bodies were recovered from different points of the Meghna River on Friday and Saturday morning.
The body of another woman, Rayesha Begum, was also recovered soon after the accident.
The accident occurred on Thursday afternoon in the Sonamai area of Baidyerbazar Union, near the Aman Cement Factory on the river.
Locals began rescue efforts immediately after the trawler sank, later joined by divers from the Fire Service and Civil Defence.
On Friday afternoon, the sunken trawler was salvaged.
According to locals, relatives from Homna in Cumilla were travelling by trawler to attend the wedding of Sajia Akter and Shishir in Sonargaon’s Haria area. While crossing the river amid rough weather, the trawler sank. Locals later rescued several people.
Mohammad Zahed Chowdhury, Station Master of Sonargaon Fire Service and Civil Defence, said, “Efforts are ongoing in the river to trace the missing.”
As of the latest reports, the search for missing Helal continues in the river.
