A clash broke out between doctors and relatives following the death of a patient at Kushtia Medical College Hospital on Friday night.
The incident occurred around 11pm at Unit 3 of the hospital’s Medicine Department.
The deceased was identified as 65-year-old Atiar Sheikh, a resident of Saota village in Kumarkhali upazila of Kushtia.
According to police and family, doctors advised an electrocardiogram (ECG) after Atiar was brought to the hospital. However, he died while preparations were under way for the ECG.
Following his death, an argument took place between his relatives and the doctors and hospital staff as the family questioned the treatment provided.
As news of the incident spread through the hospital, intern doctors and students gathered on the premises.
The interns and students were alleged to have assaulted the patient’s relatives, leading to further clash.
A relative said Atiar was initially moved from one ward to another before being taken to a doctor, who advised diagnostic tests. However, the patient died before the tests could be conducted, after which the situation worsen.
Police later arrived at the hospital and took three people, including the deceased’s son, to the police station.
Police said the situation at the hospital is now under control.
