A violent attack, systematic looting and gunfire erupted at New Gini Properties near ECB Chattar on late Saturday night, leaving the premises vandalised, security CCTV cameras smashed and triggering widespread panic across the area.
Victims stated that the housing project had been facing prolonged extortion demands prior to the raid. Law enforcement personnel subsequently intervened and brought the situation under control.
Duty Officer Sarwar of Cantonment Police Station confirmed the incident, adding that legal proceedings are currently underway.
A police team visited the spot, while senior officials, including an additional deputy commissioner (ADC), are present at the police station monitoring the situation.
Addressing reports regarding police casualties during the operation, Duty Officer Sarwar noted that no official confirmation had been received yet.
Nazim Uddin Bhuiyan, chairman of New Gini Properties Limited, alleged that an organised terrorist group carried out the attack to forcibly occupy land. He claimed that the assailants looted property worth Tk50 crore and thoroughly destroyed the project site.
Bhuiyan alleged that a criminal racket executed the assault using hired armed terrorists and teenage gangs from Bhasantek.
According to Bhuiyan, the armed assailants opened fire during the incident. They also severely injured the project’s engineer, engineer Parvez.
Parvez suffered critical head injuries after being hacked on the head and was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, while several construction labourers were also wounded.
Bhuiyan claimed that three suspects were detained alongside pistols, and noted that cases and general diaries (GD) had previously been lodged against the perpetrators over prior extortion and land-grabbing attempts.
