Dinesh Trivedi, India’s High Commissioner-designate to Bangladesh, arrived on Friday through the Benapole-Petrapole land port, a move that highlights the strategic importance of border connectivity in bilateral relations.
His entry via the land port coincides with India’s recent policy initiatives, including the launch of the Land Port Management System by the Indian Home Minister earlier this week.
Trivedi was received by Indian Deputy High Commissioner Pawan Badhe upon arrival. He was accompanied by his wife, Minal Trivedi, as they crossed into Bangladesh.

The new Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, said he aims to strengthen relations between the two countries. Speaking to reporters at the Benapole no-man’s land, he said, “My priority is the bond between the people of Bangladesh and India. We are like brothers and sisters, sharing the same dreams, the same sky, the same breeze, and many common challenges. All that is needed is love and sincerity, and all problems can be solved.”
Earlier on Thursday in Kolkata, Trivedi expressed optimism that Bangladesh and India could emerge as the strongest democracies and major global powers together, emphasising that the goal is achievable.
Trivedi was appointed India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh on 27 April by the Ministry of External Affairs.
A veteran politician, he served as Union Minister for Railways and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare during the UPA government as a member of the Trinamool Congress. He resigned from the TMC on 12 February 2021 and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on 6 March 2021.
