Acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Tarique Rahman, has said that a covert authoritarianism may emerge in the country in the coming days, from which the nation must be protected, and that there is no alternative to unity when it comes to rebuilding Bangladesh.
Calling for party leaders and activists to remain united, he said, “Bangladesh must be built, and there is no alternative to this.”
Speaking as the chief guest at the conference of Cumilla South District BNP on Saturday, Tarique Rahman said, “The people are the source of all power, so we must stand with the people. We must act according to the will of the people. We must fulfill their expectations. We have only one goal, which is to work in the interest of Bangladesh.”
He said, “For the past 16 years, we have protested against authoritarianism, and many leaders and activists have been victims of enforced disappearances and killings. Many have become disabled. The authoritarian regime has fallen; now our task is to rebuild the country.”
“The people of this country bore the burden of 16 years of authoritarianism. The people have bid farewell to that authoritarianism. Now we must stand by the people to build the country,” he added.
The acting chairman of BNP said, “Our work now is not merely about giving speeches but about getting down to work and taking action.”
The conference was presided over by Convener of Cumilla South District BNP Zakaria Taher Sumon. Speeches were given as main speakers by BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed, Vice Chairman Barkatullah Bulu, and many other leaders.
More than two thousand councilors, delegates, and leaders and activists of the party’s associate bodies were present at the conference.
