The number of dengue patients admitted to hospitals in Bangladesh has exceeded 45,000 this year. In the past 24 hours, 514 new patients were hospitalized, with no deaths reported during this period.
So far, a total of 45,206 patients have been admitted due to the mosquito-borne disease, while the death toll has reached 188.
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reported that September has seen the highest number of hospital admissions. Up to 21 September, 13,730 patients were admitted, marking the highest monthly figure of the year. Previously, July recorded 10,684 hospitalizations.
The DGHS provided a month-wise breakdown of hospitalizations this year: 1,061 in January, 374 in February, 336 in March, 701 in April, 1,773 in May, 5,951 in June, 10,684 in July, and 10,496 in August. Hospitalizations in September have already surpassed all previous records.
Deaths from dengue are also raising concerns. September recorded the highest number of fatalities this year with 66 deaths, followed by July with 41. Monthly death figures include: 10 in January, 3 in February, 0 in March, 7 in April, 3 in May, 19 in June, and 39 in August. March was the only month without any reported dengue deaths.
Region-wise, the highest number of hospitalizations occurred in the two Dhaka City Corporation areas. In the last 24 hours, 175 patients were admitted in Dhaka. Other districts reported the following: 111 in other areas of Dhaka Division, 15 in Mymensingh Division, 90 in Chattogram, 8 in Rajshahi, and 115 in Barishal.
Currently, 2,047 dengue patients are receiving treatment across hospitals in the country, including 747 in Dhaka and 1,300 in hospitals outside the capital.
The DGHS has been collecting dengue patient and death data since 2000. The year 2023 remains the deadliest, with 321,179 hospital admissions and 1,705 deaths reported due to dengue.
