Twenty special supervision committees will be formed across 20 zones in Dhaka to curb dengue, following a series of decisions taken by the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives in line with the instructions and directives of the prime minister.
Alongside dengue prevention, these initiatives aim to achieve visible progress in strengthening cleanliness, canal boundary demarcation and re-excavation, and tree plantation activities across the capital.
The decisions were taken on Sunday at a meeting held at the Local Government Division to review the overall progress of these initiatives in the Dhaka metropolitan area.
Mir Shahe Alam, state minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives, presided over the review meeting, where Ahammad Sohel Manzur, state minister for Housing and Public Works, attended as special guest.
Under the plan, 10 special supervision committees will operate in Dhaka North City Corporation and 10 in Dhaka South City Corporation under the offices of their respective zonal executive officers.
Director-level officials from the Prime Minister’s Office will lead these zonal committees as heads.
The zonal committees will comprise representatives from the Local Government Division, Health Services Division, Secondary and Higher Education Division, Dhaka WASA, Metropolitan Police, as well as the engineering, waste management, medical wings, and law enforcement agencies of the city corporations, with executive magistrates attached to them.
In addition, a high-level monitoring committee, convened by the state minister for Housing and Public Works, will be formed to observe, direct, and coordinate the overall activities of the 20 zonal committees.
This monitoring committee will include representatives from the Local Government Division, additional secretary-level officials of the city corporations, and senior officials from Dhaka WASA, Health Services Division, and Secondary and Higher Education Division.
All these committees will ensure effective steps and implementation for mosquito extermination alongside on-site cleanliness drives, canal boundary identification, and excavation work.
Md Shahidul Hasan, senior secretary of the Local Government Division, alongside senior officials from the Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Housing and Public Works, Secondary and Higher Education Division, Dhaka WASA, and Dhaka North and South City Corporations, were also present at the meeting.
