A Fire Service diving team recovered the bodies of two children from the Jamuna River in Sarishabari upazila on Thursday evening, nearly seven hours after they went missing while bathing.
The deceased were identified as Usman Gani, 8, son of Shamim Hossain, and Ismail Hossain, 7, son of Firoz Hossain. Both were residents of Radhanagar village under Pingna union in the upazila.
According to local witnesses, the two boys went to the Jamuna River along with several other children to bathe at the Radhanagar Sunset Point area around midday. They were swept away by a strong current during the bath.
Hearing the cries of the other children, locals rushed to the spot but could not locate the missing boys.
Later, being informed of the incident, a Fire Service rescue team along with a diving unit launched a search operation. After nearly seven hours of efforts, the bodies of the two children were recovered from the river around 7:30pm.
Md Mohebullah, Sub-Inspector of the Tarakandi Police Investigation Centre, confirmed the recovery of the bodies.
Md Shahidul Islam, team leader of Jamalpur Fire Service and Civil Defence, said the rescue operation began immediately after receiving reports of the missing children.
“After a long search, the bodies of the two children were recovered,” he said.
