Türkiye has dispatched its top diplomat to Dhaka in a move aimed at strengthening the growing partnership between Bangladesh and Türkiye. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan arrived in the capital on Thursday night and is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman today.
The visit is being viewed as a significant diplomatic gesture by Ankara and is expected to reinforce political ties while expanding cooperation across a range of sectors.
Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Türkiye Md Amanul Haque described the relationship as robust, saying the visit would help elevate bilateral ties to a new level.
As part of his itinerary, Fidan is expected to visit the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, where over a million forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals are currently being sheltered.
The importance Dhaka attaches to its relationship with Ankara was underscored by the fact that Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman’s first bilateral visit after assuming office was to Türkiye.
According to diplomatic sources, discussions are expected to focus on expanding economic cooperation, defence collaboration, trade and investment, as well as coordination on regional and international issues.
The two sides are also likely to explore ways to strengthen cooperation in multilateral forums, where Bangladesh and Türkiye have often worked closely on matters concerning the Muslim world, humanitarian affairs and global development.
Khalilur Rahman travelled to Ankara on 14 March, where he held talks with Fidan in what was the first high-level bilateral engagement between the two countries following Bangladesh’s national elections.
Those discussions covered a broad range of issues, including diplomatic relations, economic cooperation, defence ties, regional peace and security, and other matters of mutual interest.
