Three people, including a child, sustained burn injuries in an explosion in Bakerganj upazila of Barishal on Monday.
The incident occurred around 6am in Dudhalmou village under Bharpasha union, near the residence of one Shah Alam Hawlader. According to locals and relatives, the blast originated from a sandbag kept beside the house.
The victims are Shah Alam’s wife, Hanufa Begum, their daughter, Iti, and grandson, Fahim.
Residents rescued the victims and rushed them to Bakerganj Upazila Health Complex. After initial treatment, they were transferred to Sher‑e‑Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal for advanced care.
Jamal, son of Shah Alam, said the family remains unaware of how the explosives came to be at their premises.
He said, “The explosion occurred inside a sandbag next to the room. My mother, sister, and nephew were burnt and jumped into the river to save their lives.”
The blast triggered panic in the neighbourhood, drawing a large crowd. Police from Bakerganj station arrived to bring the situation under control.
Officers collected evidence from the site and have launched an inquiry to determine the origin and cause of the explosion.
