Three suspected drug traffickers have been arrested after a mob allegedly attacked and besieged a police team during an anti-narcotics drive in Hajrakati village of Tala upazila, Satkhira, on Sunday night.

The arrestees are Md Faruk Biswas, Rafiqul Biswas and Rashed Khan.

Police said a team led by Sub-Inspector Tapan went to the village following a General Diary filed by Sohel Sheikh, a village police member of Ward No. 1 under Khalilnagar union.

Sohel had been assisting police in anti-narcotics drives and had reported drug-related activities, which angered local drug dealers.

Police said drug dealers had threatened and assaulted Sohel at Hajrakati Market on Saturday night, prompting him to file the GD.

During Sunday’s raid, police detained a suspect named Hazrat. His associates then gathered a mob and attacked the police team in an attempt to snatch him from custody.

Tala Police Station Officer-in-charge (OC) Md Abu Bakkar Siddique rushed to the scene with additional forces, rescued the officers and brought the situation under control.

SI Tapan said the three arrested men were detained for obstructing government duty, creating a mob against police and involvement in drug-related activities.

It was alleged that local Jubo Dal leader Nurul Islam Biswas alias Nuru led the attack, but his statement could not be obtained.

OC Abu Bakkar said legal action was being taken against those involved in obstructing official duty and drug trafficking.
