Despite stringent security measures at Chittagong’s Polo Ground for a public meeting of BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, sound system equipment was stolen from the venue.
On Sunday morning, the authorities of Dhaka Raj Sound System filed a written complaint regarding the incident with Kotwali Police Station.
According to the complaint, 18 mike units and five coils of wire intended for use at the rally were stolen between 2am and 4am on Sunday. The estimated value of the stolen equipment is Tk 2,12,500.
The theft occurred despite a heavy security presence involving the police, RAB, and various intelligence agencies. The Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) had implemented strict measures, including drone surveillance and a total ban on carrying weapons, explosives, flammable substances, sticks, or any hazardous objects.
The incident has raised significant questions regarding the effectiveness of the security arrangements.
Abdur Razzak, a staff member of Dhaka Raj Sound System, said around 200 mikes had been installed in and around the Polo Ground since Friday.
He said that after a line test on Saturday night, the team left the venue, keeping two staff members on patrol to guard the equipment.
“When we went to test the system again on Sunday morning, we found 18 mike units and five coils of wire missing,” Razzak said.
He said the stolen mikes were installed on electric poles outside the rally gates at a height of about 15 to 16 feet, adding that BNP leaders advised them to lodge a formal complaint with the police after being informed of the incident.
Attempts to contact Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Aftab Uddin were unsuccessful as he did not answer calls.
Aminur Rashid, assistant commissioner (media) of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police, said he could not provide immediate information, citing engagements throughout the day.
