Global pop icon Taylor Swift and NFL star Travis Kelce married on Friday in a lavish ceremony at Madison Square Garden in New York, bringing their high-profile romance to a celebrated conclusion. The wedding drew a host of celebrities and captivated fans worldwide. Swift’s publicist, Tree Paine, confirmed the marriage later on Friday.
The couple kept their wedding plans secret throughout the celebrations. They made no public announcement before the ceremony and reportedly required guests to sign non-disclosure agreements. Tight security surrounded the venue during the United States’ 250th Independence Day weekend amid a record-breaking heatwave.
Paine said the couple chose not to have bridesmaids or groomsmen. Instead, Swift’s brother, Austin Swift, served as her Man of Honour, while Kelce’s brother, Jason Kelce, was Best Man. Family friend Adam Sandler officiated the ceremony. Paine also said Christian Dior Haute Couture designed the couple’s wedding outfits, Christian Louboutin created Swift’s custom shoes and Cartier supplied her jewellery.
Shortly before the announcement, a giant screen outside Madison Square Garden displayed the message “JUST&T MARRIED!”, confirming the marriage to crowds gathered outside.
Thousands of fans, known as Swifties, gathered near the venue and sang Swift’s songs as black SUVs carrying guests arrived. Heavy rain and a severe thunderstorm warning later forced many fans to leave the area, according to CNN. Around 1,000 guests reportedly attended the private celebration, where mobile phones were also banned.
The guest list included model Gigi Hadid, actors Hugh Grant, Bradley Cooper and Dakota Johnson, and singers Benson Boone and Camila Cabello. The Empire State Building also planned a light blue sparkle to mark the occasion.
The celebrations began on Thursday evening with a rehearsal dinner for around 100 guests at Madison Square Garden. Entertainment outlets reported that Swift and Kelce presented guests with black velvet boxes engraved with their initials, containing diamond-decorated champagne flutes. Friday’s celebrations began with afternoon cocktails before continuing with a reception that lasted late into the night. Reports also suggested Stevie Nicks and Tim McGraw would perform, while Ed Sheeran might also take the stage.
Fans also visited several New York locations mentioned in Swift’s songs ahead of the wedding. Many described the occasion as America’s “royal wedding”. One fan said Swift had become American royalty because of her influence and popularity.
To mark the occasion, the couple donated $26 million to charities across the United States, including organisations in New York and Kansas City, according to Swift’s spokesperson.
Swift married Kelce after several high-profile relationships, including those with British actor Joe Alwyn and singers John Mayer and Harry Styles, which inspired many of her songs. She announced their engagement last August on Instagram with the caption: “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.”
The 14-time Grammy Award winner recently celebrated the success of her album The Life of a Showgirl, secured induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and contributed a new song to the Toy Story 5 soundtrack. Kelce, a tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, is preparing for his 14th NFL season. He also co-hosts the popular New Heights podcast with his brother Jason.
