The tenders of contractors engaged in waste management will be cancelled if any irregularities, including failure to collect household waste and charging excessive fees, are found, said Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Md Abdus Salam on Saturday.
He made the remarks while addressing the ‘Cleanliness Day’ programme held at Shantinagar Bazar in the capital.
Abdus Salam said that action would be taken against contractors if allegations regarding waste management irregularities are proven. He added that such contractors would also be barred from participating in future tenders.
He urged market authorities and street vendors to dispose of waste at designated locations within the stipulated time and sought cooperation from all stakeholders to keep the city clean.
Referring to the dengue situation, the DSCC administrator said a recent survey conducted in different wards found Aedes mosquito larvae in around 65 per cent of households.
He said new medicines and larvicide tablets are being used as part of intensified control measures.
He also said hospitals under the city corporation’s jurisdiction have been instructed to remain prepared to ensure adequate treatment for dengue patients.
Calling for stronger environmental awareness, Abul Salam urged residents to plant more trees as part of efforts to improve urban environmental conditions.
