BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman is set to submit his application to become a registered voter on 27 December, party Standing Committee member Salauddin Ahmed said on Monday.
He made the announcement after meeting Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin at the Election Commission building in Agargaon, Dhaka.
Salauddin Ahmed explained that 25 December is a national holiday for Christmas, and the following day is the weekly holiday, Friday. However, during the election period, election offices remain open on Saturdays.
“Tarique Rahman will complete his voter registration and all related procedures on 27 December,” he said.
On the law and order situation, Salauddin Ahmed said maintaining security is primarily the government’s responsibility. While the Election Commission can assign and transfer officials during the election period, overall law and order rests with the government.
He urged the authorities to ensure a peaceful electoral process, adding, “We have called on the government, and the public also expects, that this election will be held freely and in a festive atmosphere. We hope the law and order situation will continue to improve.”
