BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has welcomed the International Crimes Tribunal’s verdict sentencing ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina in a case of crimes against humanity calling it a significant step in delivering justice.
Commenting on the tribunal’s decision, Salahuddin acknowledged that the punishments handed to Sheikh Hasina, Asaduzzaman Kamal, and former Inspector General of Police Mamun were relatively lenient compared to the severity of their alleged crimes. However, he stressed that the sentences represented the maximum penalty permissible under the law.
He added that although IGP Mamun’s sentence was reduced due to his cooperation with the court, there is hope that justice will prevail in other ongoing cases against him.
Salahuddin emphasised that the ruling sends a strong message, “No matter how strong a fascist dictatorship becomes, or how long it unlawfully wields state power, one day, it will have to answer before the court.”
Criticising Sheikh Hasina’s political ambitions, he said her attempts to establish a one-party state and government “never materialised.”
Looking ahead, Salahuddin reaffirmed the BNP’s commitment to reform and strengthening the rule of law in Bangladesh. “Through reforms, we will establish the rule of law and ensure a balanced state and government system,” he said.
He concluded that the tribunal’s verdict serves as a warning to future generations: “No one will be able to impose a fascist regime here, no one will become a dictator, and tyranny will never be allowed. This is a lesson for the future.”
