Former Brahmanbaria-5 MP Faizur Rahman Badal has been shown arrested in connection with a neq case regarding the attempted murder of student Shamim during the anti-discrimination student movement last year.
On Monday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam approved the arrest order. Badal was produced in court from prison earlier in the morning, following a request from the case’s investigating officer, New Market Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Omar Faruk. Prosecutor Md Harun Or Rashid confirmed the development.
The new case submission notes that preliminary evidence links Badal to the incident. Investigators allege he incited and financially supported the unidentified assailants who attacked protesting students.
Authorities said the arrest is necessary for a thorough investigation and to verify the accused’s involvement.
The case stems from an attack on students at Dhaka College on 16 July during the anti-discrimination student protests.
According to the complaint, students were assaulted with firearms and melee weapons under orders from high-ranking officials of the then Awami League government. Shamim, a student at Dhaka College’s English Department, was seriously injured in the attack.
Badal was earlier arrested on 18 September in Khilkhet, Dhaka, and has been taken into remand multiple times in connection with several cases linked to the 2024 student-led mass uprising.
