Swiss Ambassador Reto Renggli has praised National Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad for his role in making parliament an effective institution, noting that the Speaker has earned the confidence of the democratically elected absolute majority government and a strong opposition.
The ambassador made the remarks during a meeting with the Speaker at the National Parliament building on Monday.
Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad said he is optimistic that the post-popular uprising parliament will complete its term by fulfilling the aspirations of the people and earning their confidence.
He thanked Switzerland for its cooperation in enhancing the capacity of members of parliament and sought continued cooperation from the European country to further strengthen Bangladesh’s democracy and democratic institutions.
The Speaker proposed forming an inter-parliamentary team between Bangladesh and Switzerland for experience exchange. He said that besides continuing development cooperation, parliamentary activities of the two countries can be further strengthened through the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), and mutual relations between people can be strengthened through cultural exchange.
Ambassador Reto Rengli said Switzerland’s cooperation will continue in humanitarian assistance, education, economic development, climate resilience, and private development activities in Bangladesh.
He expressed optimism that both Bangladesh and Switzerland can benefit through the exchange of parliamentary experience and knowledge.
Discussions were also held on various issues of mutual interest between the two countries during the meeting.
