The Army has arrested a 55-year-old man, identified as Jouthan Bom, from the Thanchi border area of Bandarban and later handed him over to police.
A firearm and 55 rounds of ammunition were recovered from his possession at the time of arrest, officials said.
The incident took place on Saturday in the Sherkor Para area near the Thanchi border. The arrested man is the son of Lal Fian Bom, a resident of Sherpa Para in Padma Mouza under Thanchi upazila.
Authorities suspect that Jouthan Bom is a member of the Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF), a regional separatist group.
Thanchi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kanan Sarkar confirmed the arrest by the Army and the recovery of the weapons.
Police sources said an Army team carried out a raid on a suspected secret hideout of the Kuki-Chin National Army (KNAF) and the United Peoples Democratic Front (UPDF-Main) on 28 June. When the security forces approached, the armed group members reportedly opened fire, prompting retaliation from the Army.
Although the militants managed to flee the scene during the encounter, security forces continued operations in the surrounding areas. Jouthan Bom was later arrested during the ongoing drive, officials added.
