Sarwar Jamal Nizam, BNP nominated candidate for the Chittagong-13 (Anwara and Karnaphuli) constituency, has urged for a temporary cessation of extortion activities until February 12.
He made this request during the inauguration of an election office at Chatari Choumuhoni Bazar in Anwara upazila on Friday night. A 55-second video of his speech has since gone viral on social media, sparking significant discussion within local political circles.
In the video footage, Nizam describes Chatari as a vital economic hub where the livelihoods of residents and general business activities are central to the area’s economic health. He alleged that the locality is currently suffering from extortion, anarchy, and terrorism.
During the address, Nizam was seen with folded hands appealing to the audience to refrain from extortion until the specified date. He further issued a stern warning, stating that no one would be spared if attempts were made to tarnish the image of the BNP.
Reactions from BNP leadership
Efforts to contact Sarwar Jamal Nizam for a comment regarding the video were unsuccessful. When asked about the matter, Idris Mia, convener of Chittagong South District BNP, said that the candidate himself would be best suited to explain the context.
Mia noted that he had not yet had the opportunity to view the video as he had been occupied with election campaigning day and night.
