St Gregory’s High School and College delivered a standout SSC performance in Old Dhaka, recording a 99.65 per cent pass rate even as the country posted its lowest pass percentage in 19 years.
Of the 284 candidates from the Laxmibazar institution, 283 passed, with 173 securing GPA-5. That means 61 per cent of its candidates achieved the highest GPA.
Only one candidate, from the Bangla version of the science group, failed. The institution said the student had been unable to clear the SSC hurdle for two consecutive years.
All 120 students who passed from the science group secured GPA-5.
The English version recorded a 100 per cent pass rate, with all 69 candidates passing and 49 securing GPA-5. All 35 candidates from the business studies group also passed, with four achieving GPA-5.
Brother Placid Peter Ribeiro, principal of the school, attributed the performance to discipline, structured teaching and teachers’ efforts.
“Strict discipline, well-structured teaching and the tireless efforts of teachers are behind our consistent success,” he told TIMES of Bangladesh.
Dhaka Government Muslim High School also posted a strong performance, with 153 of its 166 candidates passing, giving it a pass rate of 92.17 per cent. Twenty students secured GPA-5.
In the science group, 72 of 77 candidates passed, with 19 securing GPA-5. In business studies, 81 of 89 candidates passed, with one achieving the highest GPA.
“We are satisfied with the students’ results,” said the school’s headteacher, ABM Saifuddin Yahya.
Pogose Laboratory School and College, another prominent Old Dhaka institution, however, fell short of expectations.
Of its 402 candidates, 340 passed, putting the pass rate at 84.58 per cent. Only 14 students secured GPA-5.
Headteacher Abdus Sattar said, “We will carry out stricter monitoring in the future.”
