Footpaths around Hope Market at Mirpur-10 are now largely free of hawkers and makeshift shops following an eviction drive, allowing pedestrians to move more easily through the busy area.
Local pedestrians said they were facing fewer difficulties as pavements that had long been occupied by hawkers and mobile stalls were now open. The change came two days after a clash between hawkers and Dhaka North City Corporation staff and police during an eviction drive in the area.
The clash broke out on the footpath in front of Hope Market as DNCC staff carried out an eviction drive from Mirpur-10 to Mirpur-14 from around 10am. Several people, including police personnel, were injured in the violence.
Two DNCC dump trucks were set on fire, while three bulldozers were vandalised. A police vehicle was also damaged during the clash.
Following the drive, footpaths around Hope Market and nearby areas have remained largely clear of roadside stalls and hawkers.
The cleared pavements have made it easier for pedestrians to use the area, with local residents saying everyday movement has become more comfortable.
Many said the absence of makeshift shops had reduced congestion on the footpaths and improved access along the main roads around Mirpur-10.
