Algerian Ambassador to Bangladesh Abdelouahab Saidani paid a courtesy call on Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed at his office at the Ministry of Home Affairs at the Bangladesh Secretariat.
The two sides discussed peace and order, security cooperation, prevention of human trafficking, migration management, and expanding economic and commercial cooperation.
They also discussed specialised training for security forces, joint workshops and exchanging legislative support. Initiatives have been taken for long-term government-to-government (G2G) imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and fertiliser between Bangladesh and Algeria, which both sides said would strengthen bilateral commercial relations.
The Algerian ambassador recalled that Algeria was the first Arab country to recognise Bangladesh after its independence in 1971 and expressed his country’s interest in further strengthening the historical and friendly ties between the two countries.
The Home Minister said Algeria could increase imports of readymade garments (RMG) and pharmaceutical products from Bangladesh. He also invited Algeria to recruit skilled manpower, including doctors and nurses, from Bangladesh.
Regarding an Algerian national undergoing trial in Bangladesh, Salahuddin advised submitting an application through due judicial process and assured necessary legal cooperation from the Bangladeshi side.
Referring to the invitation extended by the Prime Minister of Bangladesh to the Algerian President to visit Bangladesh, the Home Minister said Bangladesh was delighted that the invitation had been accepted and stressed the importance of determining convenient diplomatic dates for the visit.
Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Monjur Morshed Chowdhury, additional secretary (Political and Immigration Wing) Ziauddin Ahmed, and director general (Africa Wing) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ATM Abdur Rouf Mondal, among others, were present.
