Spider-Man: Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton has revealed new details about the highly anticipated Marvel film, promising a darker chapter for Peter Parker while introducing fresh web-swinging visuals that fans have never seen before, reports Collider.
Speaking to Collider ahead of the film’s theatrical release, Cretton said one of his biggest goals was to make audiences feel as though they were inside Spider-Man’s mask during the action sequences.
“It was really important for us to try to find ways to remind people that Peter Parker is in that suit,” Cretton said.
“Finding a way to get the camera in a place where you could believe you are sitting inside that mask with him.”
To achieve that effect, the filmmakers drew inspiration from parkour and wingsuit videos, using camera placements and lens choices designed to heighten the sense of speed and vertigo.
The fourth MCU Spider-Man film picks up after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Peter Parker sacrificed his personal life to save the multiverse.
With the world forgetting his identity, Peter now fights crime alone without the support of Stark Industries, MJ or Ned.
His isolation eventually leads to an unexpected alliance with Frank Castle, also known as the Punisher, played by Jon Bernthal.
The story also introduces a new twist to Peter’s powers, as he develops an uncontrollable mutation linked to his Spider-Man abilities while facing an invisible new villain.
The film stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker alongside Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Mark Ruffalo and Jon Bernthal.
Cretton also shared that he spoke only with former Spider-Man director Jon Watts before taking over the franchise.
“The only director I spoke with was Jon Watts, who was very gracious in sharing some wise words,” he said. “It was mainly very positive about the people I was going to work with and the experience I was going to have.”
The filmmaker also briefly addressed the future of Marvel’s Wonder Man, saying he hopes a second season will move forward soon.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to hit cinemas in less than two weeks, with Marvel positioning it as Peter Parker’s darkest story in the MCU so far while balancing emotional stakes with the humour and spectacle fans expect from the franchise.
