Students of South Point School & College’s Malibagh campus secured one championship and two runners-up titles at the national-level chess competition of Notun Kuri Sports 2026, held on 26 July at the Bangladesh Chess Federation Hall Room at the National Sports Council in Dhaka.
Warsia Khusbu, a Grade 9 student, became the unbeaten girls’ champion after winning all seven rounds for a perfect seven points, while Sidratul Muntaha Nafi and Muhtady Tajwar Nasheed finished runners-up in the girls’ and boys’ categories, respectively, the institution said in a press release.
Sidratul, a Grade 8 student, scored 5.5 points to secure second place in the girls’ competition.
Muhtady, a Grade 6 student, collected six points to finish runners-up in the boys’ category. Awsaf Chowdhury, representing the Dhaka region, won the boys’ championship with six points through the Buchholz tie-break system.
Thousands of young chess players took part in the competition through thana, district and divisional stages before advancing to the national round.
Three of the four players selected to represent the Dhaka region at the national stage were students of South Point School & College.
Mohammad Liaquat Ali, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, distributed prizes among the winners at the prize-giving ceremony.
FIDE Masters Abu Sufian Shakil and Noshin Anjum attended as special guests.
Bangladesh’s first Grandmaster Niaz Murshed congratulated the young players and encouraged them to remain dedicated and work hard.
International Arbiter Md Haroon or Rashid conducted the chess competition, assisted by Mohammad Shamim and Saiful Islam.
Principal Colonel Md Shamsul Alam, PSC (Retd), congratulated the students and expressed hope that South Point students would continue to excel at national and international levels.
