The board of directors of Eastern Bank PLC (EBL) has unanimously elected Anis Ahmed as the bank’s new chairman. Anis, who is the founder and group chief executive officer of MGH Group, was elected during a board meeting on Monday.
Anis succeeds Showkat Ali Chowdhury in the role. Prior to his election as chairman, he served as a member of EBL’s Executive Committee and previously held the position of chair for the bank’s Risk Management Committee.
In a statement, EBL highlighted that Anis brings over three decades of international business experience to the position.
He leads the Singapore-headquartered MGH Group, an organisation that operates in 26 countries across various sectors, including logistics, supply chain management, aviation, consumer businesses, and financial services.
Following his appointment, Anis Ahmed outlined his vision for the bank, saying EBL would prioritise digital transformation and promotion of women in senior leadership positions.
“Today EBL entered a new era of banking where the board will actively facilitate the ascension of women-led senior leadership and digital transformation to become a daily lifestyle brand for our customers, built on EBL’s strong financial foundation,” he said.
In addition to his corporate leadership, he is involved in several technology ventures. He is also active in philanthropy through Suhana and Anis Ahmed Foundation.
