Dasun Shanaka cut a regretful figure after the Pakistan Cricket Board banned him for a year in Pakistan, following his sudden withdrawal from the Pakistan Super League while contracted to Lahore Qalandars on 21 March.
He accepted the charge. He did not fight the outcome. “I regret withdrawing from the PSL. I sincerely apologise to the people of Pakistan, PSL fans and the wider cricket community. I am especially sorry to Lahore Qalandars supporters.”
The PCB Officials reviewed his reasons and rejected them outright. They saw a clear breach of contract. In franchise cricket, that offence rarely escapes punishment.
Shanaka’s next move added intrigue. He joined Rajasthan Royals as a replacement for Sam Curran, yet he has not featured in a single match. That weakens his defence.
He tried to clarify his intent. He insists he did not walk away from the PSL to chase another deal.
The PCB enforced the ban and shut the door on his 2027 PSL campaign.
Shanaka tried to rebuild bridges with fans and said, “I have deep respect for Pakistan fans and hope to return to the PSL in the future with renewed commitment.”
This PSL ban case does not stand alone for Shanaka. Blessing Muzarabani faced a two-year PSL ban after switching from Islamabad United to Kolkata Knight Riders.
