Liverpool moved into the fourth round of the League Cup after beating Tottenham 3-1 at Anfield on Wednesday.
Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai scored for the hosts. Conor Gallagher got Tottenham’s only goal.
Liverpool made 10 changes from the side that drew with Fulham in the Premier League at the weekend. Several young players were given a chance by Andoni Iraola.
Tottenham also changed much of their team as Roberto De Zerbi made eight changes. The visitors had chances early in the game but failed to take them.
Liverpool went ahead through Mac Allister in the 21st minute. The Argentine found the top corner with a fine first time finish from the edge of the box.
The hosts took their 1-0 lead into half time. Gakpo made it 2-0 in the 55th minute. He cut inside before firing into the far corner.
Tottenham responded through Gallagher in the 69th minute. He headed home from close range after Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili failed to deal with a corner.
It was Tottenham’s first goal against Premier League opposition this season. The goal gave Spurs hope and they pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages.
However, Szoboszlai ended their hopes in stoppage time. The Hungarian fired a powerful long range strike into the top corner to complete the 3-1 win.
Former Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson also returned to Anfield for the first time since leaving the club. He came on for Tottenham in the second half and received a warm reception from the home supporters.
Liverpool will now move into the fourth round, while Tottenham’s League Cup campaign is over.
