Seven women candidates have secured victory in the 13th national parliamentary election under the BNP banner and its political fold, as the party moves to form the government with a commanding majority.
BNP and its alliance have won 218 out of 299 seats, according to unofficial results, placing the party close to a two-thirds majority in parliament and ensuring a strong position to form the next government.
Among the winners, six women candidates contested with the party’s ‘Sheaf of Paddy’ symbol and secured decisive victories. In addition, Rumeen Farhana won from Brahmanbaria-2 as an independent candidate after her expulsion from the party.
The elected women members of parliament are Afroza Khan Rita from Manikganj-3, Esrat Sultana Elen Bhutto from Jhalakathi-2, Tahsina Rushdir Luna from Sylhet-2, Shama Obaid from Faridpur-2, Nayab Yusuf Kamal from Faridpur-3 and Farzana Sharmin Putul from Natore-1. Barrister Rumeen Farhana also secured victory from Brahmanbaria-2 as an independent candidate.
Political observers view the success of women candidates in this election as a positive signal for the party and a sign of growing female representation in national politics.
