Kylian Mbappe missed a stoppage time penalty as Real Madrid suffered their first defeat of the season in a 1-0 loss to Real Betis on Saturday.
Troy Parrott scored the only goal of the La Liga clash in Seville. The substitute struck in the 81st minute before Mbappe wasted a huge chance to rescue Madrid late in the game.
Real Madrid went into the match with a perfect league record. They had won their opening three matches and were looking to continue that run against Betis.
However, Madrid struggled to find a breakthrough despite creating several chances. Mbappe was denied more than once, while Vinicius Junior also threatened the Betis goal.
Parrott came off the bench in the 69th minute and changed the game 12 minutes later.
Betis created the chance from a corner. Thibaut Courtois got a hand to the initial header, but the ball fell to Parrott. The Irish striker reacted quickly and fired the rebound into the net.
Madrid thought they had equalised in the 89th minute when Arda Guler produced a bicycle kick. However, the goal was ruled out for offside.
Jose Mourinho’s side then received one final opportunity deep into stoppage time.
Natan brought down Vinicius inside the penalty area and Madrid were awarded a penalty. Mbappe stepped up with the chance to make it 1-1, but goalkeeper Alvaro Valles saved his spot kick.
Betis survived the remaining moments to seal a memorable 1-0 victory.
The result handed Real Madrid their first defeat of the new season after three straight La Liga wins. For Parrott, it was also a special night as he scored his first goal for Betis in only his third appearance for the club.
