Police recovered the hanging body of a Supreme Court employee from a bathroom at the Bijoy 71 building on the Supreme Court premises in Dhaka on Monday afternoon.
The deceased, identified as Kamal Uddin, 47, served as a court assistant, locally known as a jamadar, in the High Court Division.
He was the son of Kabir Uddin, hailing from Baro Katuri village in Netrokona Sadar upazila.
According to Shahbagh Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Rashedul Alam, the body was recovered around 4pm and subsequently sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) morgue for post-mortem.
Police reports indicate that Kamal Uddin entered a bathroom on the eighth floor of the Bijoy ’71 building sometime between 12:45pm and 2:15pm.
He allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a window grill with a rope.
While the police found no marks of injury on the body, a detailed investigation into the incident is currently underway.
The victim’s nephew, Rakibul Hasan, stated that Kamal Uddin resided in a rented house on Road No. 1 in the capital’s Adabor area with his wife Moni Akhter and their two daughters.
Family members informed the police that Kamal had been suffering from long-term mental depression.
He was also reportedly physically unwell. Furthermore, his mother, Tajjatonnessa, is currently battling cancer and is receiving treatment in their village home.
“Whether it was a suicide or whether there were other factors involved can only be determined after a proper investigation and the post-mortem,” he said.
Despite these circumstances, the family remains uncertain about the exact motive behind the death.
