Saudi Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr Abdullah Zafer H bin Abiyah announced on Sunday that the kingdom has issued 1.4 million visas to Bangladeshi nationals in 2025, with 750,000 specifically designated for employment.

In a meeting with Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, the ambassador noted that the Kingdom’s ongoing development initiatives have created significant opportunities for both semi-skilled and skilled Bangladeshi labourers.

The diplomats engaged in discussions regarding various matters of mutual concern, with the Ambassador pledging to further bolster the bilateral ties between the two nations.

Welcoming the envoy, Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman characterised Saudi Arabia as a “trusted and longstanding partner” of Bangladesh.

He pointed out that official diplomatic relations were inaugurated in 1976 during the presidency of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, marked by the establishment of the Bangladesh Embassy in Saudi Arabia.

He further recalled the President’s landmark visit to the Kingdom in 1977, noting that both parties recognise his significant impact on fostering unity within the Muslim Ummah.

While expressing gratitude for the hospitality shown to the large Bangladeshi workforce in Saudi Arabia, he also highlighted the potential for deeper collaboration in energy, trade, investment, and other key sectors by capitalising on the geostrategic advantages of both countries.

Turning to the refugee crisis, the Foreign Minister reminded the ambassador of Saudi Arabia’s 1979 assistance in repatriating roughly 200,000 Rohingyas following a request from President Ziaur Rahman.

He voiced appreciation for the Kingdom’s ongoing humanitarian aid to the 1.2 million Rohingyas currently sheltered in Bangladesh and requested further assistance in achieving their sustainable return to Myanmar.

Ambassador bin Abiyah affirmed his support for the current administration and expressed a desire to transform existing bilateral ties into a “comprehensive relationship.”

Earlier that day, the ambassador also met with the newly appointed State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid Islam.

During the meeting, the Obaid lauded the reform measures implemented by the Saudi Crown Prince under Saudi Vision 2030. Both officials reaffirmed their dedication to enhancing bilateral relations for the mutual benefit of both nations.
