Veteran screenwriter Salim Khan, father of Bollywood superstar Salman Khan, is scheduled to be discharged from Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai on Tuesday morning.
The 90-year-old has spent the past month in hospital after being admitted in February with age-related health complications. Hindustan Times reported that Salim has recovered sufficiently to continue convalescence at home.
Salim was admitted to Lilavati Hospital in Bandra West on February 17 under senior consultant Dr Jaleel Parkar. During his stay, he underwent Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA), a diagnostic procedure used to identify cerebrovascular conditions such as brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, fistulas and acute blockages.
Dr Parkar confirmed that Salim had suffered a minor brain haemorrhage. “There was minimal brain haemorrhage. A small procedure was successfully completed. He is fine and stable. He is still on a ventilator, but we hope to remove him from it soon. Considering his age, recovery takes longer, but he is doing quite well,” he said.
During his hospitalisation, Salim received regular visits from family, including his sons Salman, Arbaaz and Sohail Khan. Friends from the industry, such as Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan, also visited, along with his longtime collaborator Javed Akhtar.
Last week, Arbaaz Khan suggested that his father would soon return home. Speaking to photographers outside an iftar party, he said, “He is better now. Dad is improving.”
Salim Khan began his career in the 1960s as an actor, appearing in a handful of films and playing a supporting role alongside Shammi Kapoor in ‘Teesri Manzil’. Limited opportunities prompted him to focus on writing.
In the late 1960s, he partnered with Javed Akhtar to form the legendary screenwriting duo Salim-Javed. Together, they wrote 24 films, 20 of which became major hits, including Seeta Aur Geeta, Sholay, Deewar, Don, Kranti and Mr India, cementing their status as Bollywood’s most influential screenwriters.
