At least 19 people were killed in separate road and railway accidents across five districts on Thursday, with the deadliest crash claiming 14 lives in Bagerhat.
The incidents occurred at different times in Bagerhat, Cox’s Bazar, Manikganj, Chattogram and Sirajganj, according to police and local officials.
Bus–microbus crash in Bagerhat kills 14
Fourteen people died after a Bangladesh Navy bus collided head-on with a passenger microbus on the Mongla–Khulna highway in Bagerhat.
The accident occurred around 3pm near Belai Bridge.
Among the victims were 11 members of the same family, including Mongla municipality BNP Ward 8 President Abdur Razzak, his four sons, three daughters-in-law including a newly married bride, and three grandchildren.
The microbus driver and a relative of the bride were also killed, while one victim remained unidentified.
Family members had travelled to Koyra upazila in Khulna on Wednesday to bring home the bride of Razzak’s youngest son, Sabbir.
The crash occurred while they were returning to Mongla with the newly married bride on Thursday afternoon.
Katakhali Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Zafar Ahmed said several passengers died on the spot after the head-on collision.
Others died after being taken to nearby hospitals, he added.
Two children killed in Ramu crash
Two children died after a mini-truck collided head-on with a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Ramu upazila of Cox’s Bazar.
The crash occurred around 4pm near Mirza Ali’s shop in Khuniapalong union.
The victims were Busra, 7, daughter of Ukhiya resident Faridul Islam, and Jannatul Mawa Moni, 14, daughter of Nurul Alam.
Three others, including the driver, were injured.
Locals rescued the injured and took them to Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital.
Jannatul Mawa Moni later died while being taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital due to critical injuries.
Couple killed in Manikganj highway crash
A husband and wife were killed after their motorcycle collided head-on with a pickup van on the Dhaka–Aricha highway in Shibaloy upazila of Manikganj.
The accident occurred around noon near Barangail bus stand.
The victims were Monayem Khan, 40, and his wife Josna Akter, residents of Dakshinkhan in Dhaka.
Police said Monayem Khan died on the way to hospital after locals rescued the couple from the scene.
Josna Akter later died while undergoing treatment at hospital.
Jubo Dal leader killed in Mirsarai
A Jubo Dal leader was killed after being hit by a drum truck in Mirsarai upazila of Chattogram.
The accident occurred around 2pm near the Mirsarai National Special Economic Zone area.
The victim, Kamal Uddin, 42, was the convener of Mirsarai upazila Jubo Dal.
He was taken to a local hospital and later referred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Two cousins killed in Sirajganj train accident
Two cousins died after being hit by a train in Ullapara upazila of Sirajganj.
The accident occurred around noon on the Dhaka–Ishwardi railway line near Ghatina Bridge.
The victims were Faisal Ahmed, 20, and his cousin Alfe Sani, 18, from Dhukuria Bera village in Belkuchi upazila.
Police said the two were walking on the bridge when the Rangpur Express, travelling from Dhaka, struck them.
One died on the spot while the other succumbed to injuries after being taken to hospital.
