Man arrested over crude bomb blast near ICT centre

Police have arrested a man following a crude bomb explosion opposite the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) investigation centre in Dhanmondi, Dhaka.

The arrestee, identified as Rezaul Islam, 23, was apprehended by Dhanmondi Model Police Station officers whilst attempting to flee the scene.

According to police, the incident occurred around 12:30am on Wednesday when two crude bombs were detonated in quick succession on the paved road in front of a house in Dhanmondi.

DMP Deputy Commissioner Md Akhtar Hossain said during initial interrogation, Rezaul confessed to being contracted for the attack. Approximately 10 to 12 days ago, an unidentified individual approached Rezaul at a tea stall in New Market area, offering him Tk50,000 to detonate crude bombs in front of the ICT investigation centre.

In accordance with the plan, Rezaul conducted reconnaissance of the location on 28 September.

Later, on Tuesday night, he went to the spot, exploded two crude bombs, and attempted to escape through a nearby alley before being caught by police.

Police confirmed that there were no casualties in the explosion. Remnants of the exploded crude bombs were recovered from the spot by police officers.

A case has been registered against the arrestee, who is currently undergoing interrogation.
