A tiny Japanese macaque named Punch has captured the affection of visitors at the Ichikawa City Zoo, drawing crowds eager to see the youngster whose journey from abandonment to acceptance has resonated widely online.
On Friday, more than 100 zoo-goers gathered around the enclosure, snapping photos and offering encouragement as the six-month-old primate tentatively approached fellow members of the troop. The young monkey first gained internet fame after footage emerged showing him clinging to zookeepers and hauling a stuffed orangutan for reassurance.
Zoo officials explained, “Punch was abandoned by his mother shortly after birth, possibly due to inexperience or summer heat stress. For young monkeys, bonding with their mothers is essential for safety and emotional stability.”
Despite attempts to comfort him with towels, the infant became deeply attached to the orangutan plush, which staff now affectionately refer to as “Ora-mama.”
Visitors traveled from various areas to meet the monkey in person after following his story online. Many described him as “cute” and “heartwarming,” while others admitted to feeling emotional watching his slow integration into the troop.
Punch has recently begun interacting with the group more frequently, occasionally poking others and sometimes being gently rebuffed. One video captures him scurrying back to his toy after a brief rejection, only to rejoin the play shortly afterward.
Other footage shows adult monkeys grooming and embracing him – a vital social ritual among primates that strengthens communal ties.
Zoo staff encourage onlookers to support Punch as he learns to socialise, noting that while he faces occasional scolding, his resilience and mental strength continue to shine.
Born in July 2025, Punch initially struggled with isolation, as other monkeys either ignored or reacted aggressively toward him. His bond with the stuffed toy offered comfort until genuine friendships within the troop began to form.
Across the globe, social media users have flooded platforms with messages of affection, celebrating how a once-rejected baby monkey has become adored by millions.
